Experience
Systems EditorThe Fresno Bee
Fresno, Calif. – When I joined The Bee’s news staff my first task was installing a $1.2 million Unisys Hermes Publishing System, training 150 reporters and editors on its use and implementing a digital photo/text archive workflow using MediaServer from Software Construction Company. As the paper expanded its online presence, my duties grew to include the integration of the print publishing system with the web; the design and implementation of an audio/video studio; basic training of the staff on our online publishing system; and maintenance of our in-house Drupal blog and SharePoint site and web publishing system. I work with reporters and columnists to enhance their understanding and use of Facebook, Twitter and Friendfeed to grow audience. I write an in-house column for editors reporting on the latest technological advances that would benefit the day-to-day operations of a news organization such as netbooks, smart phones, web services, and trends in social networking and neutral content publishing.
Other duties include writing tags and style sheets for the publishing system, mastering the publishing system’s workflow, training all newsroom employees on its use and writing “help” documentation for the different workflows and applications. After the launch of the publishing and archive systems I would troubleshoot problems while working with vendors to find solutions to bugs and “features.” Since the original installation I’ve led the news and prepress staff through three system upgrades and trained new and current employees on the use of various applications including Microsoft and Adobe products, as well as various web-based tools.
